DICTIONARY OF MUSIC & MUSICIANS (Ed Stanly Sadie):
"Lindley, William. b London 1802. died Manchester 12/8/1869. English cellist. He was a pupil of his father Robert Lindley; first appeared in public in 1817. He soon had a position in all the best London orchestras. Between 1820 & 1826 he appeared occasionally as a duo with his father, sometimes augmented by Dragonetti. He appeared in a piano trio at the 1827 Bath concerts. He showed great promise, but delicate health & extreme nervousness prohibited him achieving prominence as a soloist, and he withdrew from public performance."

"LISZT: MY TRAVELLING CIRCUS LIFE" By David Ian Allsobrook. Published by MacMillan Press, London 1991.
Page 113: "Aston's concert was part of a Liverpool Subscription series*. The orchestra was lead by Mr Herrman and, like other members of the band, the leading cellist Mr W Lindley has been specially imported from Manchester." "The use of the 'foreigners', more particularly of specially-hated Mancunians, were seen by some as an affront to Liverpool's musical dignity." *November 1840.
Page 115: "In the late 1830's in London, the pianist Moscheles had initiated chamber music soirees at which the 'serious' quartets of Beethoven, Mozart & Medelsohn were performed alongside the more accessible, fashionable works of Ferdinand Ries and Georges Onslow." "Manchester imitated Moscheles and, in November 1840, we find a quartet series taking place at the Athenaeum, where Liszt was to play. The violinists Seymour and Couran, the violist Sudlow, and Liverpool's detested 'foriegner' Lindley, joined Mr P Johnson the pianist, in performances of Mozart's G Minor Piano Quartet op 73, Beethovan's Cello Sonata op 69, and Mendelsohn's E flat Quartet op 44. The interludes - songs by Weber and Henry Bishop - were provided by soprano Miss Graham."
